Windows Phone 7 Exam E-Book available

Do you want to become a Microsoft Certified Professional Developer on Windows Phone 7? Then you have to take two MCTS exams (for Silverlight 4 Development and Data Access with the .NET Framework 4.0) and a PRO exam named Designing and Developing Windows Phone Applications. As a preparation for this exam, I have created an article series over at Silverlight Show a while ago that covers all the skills that are being measured by this exam.

I'm proud to announce that the team of Silverlight Show has made it possible to offer these articles as e-book, available for download in various formats for all your favorite readers. Not only does this e-book contain my own articles on the exam and surrounding topics, but also the referenced articles in this series that have been written by other authors. I absolutely need to thank all those people for their permission to include their great articles – this project would not have been possible without them!

I have used the resources covered in this e-book to prepare myself for the exam, which I successfully took in July this year. If you are interested in learning more, you have the following options to obtain the book for a very moderate price tag of less than five US-$ here:

The e-book in the Silverlight Show e-book store (PDF, mobi, ePub formats)
The e-book on Amazon.com (Kindle format)
The e-book on Amazon.de (Kindle format)

I hope you enjoy this release and wish you all the best for your exam!

Hi Peter,

Congratulations! May I ask you how did you attend this exam? Online? Where, US or Germany? Is there a language to choose, i.e. I would prefer English over Japanese?

Hi Joerg,

you have to find a test center near you where you can take the exam (it's not possible to take the exam online). The registration for the exam however is performed online. There you can also find lists of test centers in your area, so you can conveniently pick the one best for you: http://www.prometric.com

During the process of scheduling the exam on the above site you also can and have to choose what language you want to take the exam in. IIRC US-English was the only available language for that particular exam anyway - which may have changed in the meantime, but English always is an available option.

Later when you take the actual exam in your local test center, you can also choose the programming language you want the questions to be in (e.g. Visual Basic or C#).

Hi Peter,

thanks for your information.
I  found it on the japanese MS and Prometric sites. The exams are availabe in English and the Japanese version is in the works, but I would chooese English anyway. And, one only has to take the 70-516 and the 70-599 exams. The third exam you mentioned on the SilverlightShow site is not required.

I might have a tough time with the LINQ and Entity related stuff, because I'm coming more from the classical ADO/DAO stuff, no need to switch to LINQ and Lightwitch yet. We're also behind the lastest ADO.net stuff. Those corporate companies, like mine, are really slow in adopting newer technologies.

I hope I have enough spare time to work through your ebook, to get at least some preperation. I also costs a bunch of money, in my case its 30000Yen.
As there is only one official Windows Phone 7 in Japan yet, interest in developing apps is great, but actually nothing really exciting is happening here. Hope this will change when other carriers sell WP7 phone too.

Danke und Gruesse, Joerg

Hi again. Where did you get the information about the required exams from? I have to admit that I already had taken the 70-506 exam before, so I don't know whether I would have received the certificate without it, but the learning page is pretty clear on the topic:

www.microsoft.com/.../mcpd.aspx#tab2

It claims that you need all three, including the Silverlight 70-506 exam.

Yes, when an exam requires knowledge about a topic you're not familiar with, it can become a bit hairy - hands-on experience always is the best way to learn something, and studying just for an exam can be exhausting. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck and hope you'll make it without any problems!

Thanks Peter,
I had to check the japanese MS Learning site to find a nearby training center. It states only two exams.

www.microsoft.com/.../default.mspx

Anyway, I will check this back to be on the save side.
Your ebook comes in really handy, because I completed two development projects last week and have now some kind of 'spare time' before the next one(s) are starting. I always like to use these times to improve my skills (on company costs ;-) ), especially the WP7 stuff (have a lot of ideas), and of course have to look into LINQ now (the new SQL server isn't that for away too).

I'm in Deutschland next Februray (2012) visitin my family, hope to catch a newer WP7 device, we will see newer Windows Phone 7 devices as early as Summer 2012.

The misunderstand may be that the site only lists the two prerequisite exams:

MCPD: Windows Phoneの資格取得には、まず 70-506 TS: Silverlight 4, Development と 70-516 TS: Accessing Data with Microsoft .NET Framework 4 の 2 試験に合格している必要があります。

But 599 itself of course also is a separate exam, making it three all in all.

Good luck with taking the exam, and of course it's great if you can prepare as part of your work time :).
